Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD)
Intrusive, distressing thoughts (obsessions) followed by repetitive behaviors or mental rituals (compulsions) done to reduce anxiety.
Overview
OCD is a condition where a person experiences intrusive, unwanted thoughts (obsessions) that create anxiety, followed by repetitive behaviors or mental rituals (compulsions) to relieve that anxiety. These rituals may provide temporary relief but reinforce the cycle of fear. OCD can take many forms, including contamination fears, checking, counting, arranging, intrusive images, or moral/religious concerns. When untreated, it can become time-consuming and significantly impair daily functioning.
